The University of Alabama at Birmingham is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award degrees at the baccalaureate, master's, specialist, and doctoral levels. Its history is singular in higher education. Established as an extension center of the University of Alabama in the mid-1930s, with an inaugural class of 116 students, UAB became an autonomous campus in 1969. In the four decades since, this young, dynamic university has driven the social, cultural, and economic revival of Birmingham and has evolved into a world-renowned research university and medical center.
